Problems with the new post iconsActiveBoard handles new/read posts by putting a cookie with a timestamp on the user's computer whenever they view a thread. When a page is loaded, ActiveBoard decides if a thread has new posts by comparing the last modified time of that thread to the last access timestamp in the user's cookie. If the thread last post was more than 7 days ago, it is automatically old.
There are several things that can happen with this scheme:
1) If the user isn't accepting cookies, threads will stay new until a week elapses without activity.
2) If the user clears their cookie cache, all recent threads will appear to be unread again.
Sometimes there is confusion because users don't realise that the new posts icon is turned on for a thread they have previously read if there have been any new responses. Somtimes users are confused by Sticky or Poll topics because the icons for these posts replaces the new/old icon and they may not realize that there are new posts in these threads they have not read.
